The History of EFT
The origins are from Acupressure. In the early 1980’s Dr. Roger Callahan, an American psychologist specialised in anxiety. Dr Callahan learned Applied Kinesiology and studied the meridian system of acupressure in an effort to find better answers to some of the problems his patients faced, particularly those of anxiety and phobias. Callahan brought the tapping procedures into his psychological treatment, by combining the use of “tapping” for emotional problems with simultaneous focus on the problem. Callahan had discovered that if a person is focusing on a specific fear at the time they tap; this fear can be removed, often permanently.
Dr Callahan used specific sequences of acupressure points for different emotional problems. He decided that there was a correct tapping sequence for every emotional issue, and that this could be determined for a particular individual through the use of muscle testing. He outlined a series of specific tapping sequences which he called “algorithms”. These were specific treatments for specific issues. The treatment was called “Thought Field Therapy” or “TFT”). This treatment however involved muscle testing and was found to be complex and cumbersome and could not be used as a self help treatment.
Gary Craig, who had studied TFT on all its levels with Dr Callahan and was originally one of Dr Callahan’s star pupils, decided to separate his work from that of Dr Callahan in order to be able to use his own single-algorithm approach. Craig developed his individual single algorithm method which he called “Emotional Freedom Techniques” (EFT)
Gary Craig founded the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) in the 1990s. It was an amazingly effective and simple method that could be self taught in a short time. EFT is a powerful means of promoting self healing. This technique can be used alone or in a client and provider setting where such a relationship facilitates the discipline of time, energy, and effort the client isn’t able to establish alone.
If we do not deal with our emotional issues, they often manifest physically. If not addressed for long periods of time, disease may sometimes result.
Here are links that will take you to a sampling of the letters and other communications eftuniverse.com received from EFT users and practitioners: Pain Management, Addictions, Weight loss, Allergies, Children's Issues, Animals, Vision, Headaches, Panic/Anxiety, Asthma, Trauma, PTSD, Abuse, Depression, Dyslexia, Carpal Tunnel, Anger, ADD-ADHD, Fears/phobias, Eating disorders, OCD, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Neuropathy, Fear of Flying, Claustrophobia, Agoraphobia, Anorexia/Bulimia, Sports and other Performance.
The successes reported by these people range from improvement of the issue(s) to the complete cessation of all symptoms. The permanence of the successes varies widely and cannot be predicted in advance. In some cases, the symptoms re-appear right away and thus require more EFT or other interventions. In other cases, the symptoms vanish and don't re-appear.
